Crew Member Shares Depression After Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
