New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
